Activist Brittany Ramos DeBarros is running for Congress in her native Staten Island, attempting to take back the city’s only Republican-held congressional seat. She’s been called “Staten Island’s Answer to AOC.”
Ramos DeBarros is a veteran of the war on Afghanistan, an experience she says radicalized her. After returning home, Ramos DeBarros became involved in community organizing with groups like the Poor People’s Campaign and About Face: Veterans Against the War. Ramos DeBarros is also a member of her local DSA chapter. Those experiences are apparent in her policy platform, which calls for fully funded health care; student, medical, and consumer debt cancellation; and passing the Green New Deal.
Ramos DeBarros cites her identity as a queer Afro-Latina as a motivating factor for her run. “My communities are suffering in really serious ways right now,” Ramos DeBarros told Teen Vogue in February 2021. “This wasn’t my original plan for my life, but I have this feeling that when community calls, you answer.”
